La Penita

The campground is in a small town called La Penita, just north of Puerto Vallarta.

The campground is terraced with a jungle on one side and the beach on the other.  Obviously, we are on the jungle side.  We like camping on or near the beach but the campground was nearly full; a phenomenon in our experience with Mexican campgrounds on the Gulf side of Mexico. Most of the campers here were Canadian; which also seems to be the norm in Mexico.  I guess they have more incentive to head south for the winter.

This is a view from the beach side of the campground.

The beach was beautiful and almost empty, making it even more attractive.

This is the view in the other direction along the beach.

The only activity at all was three kids trying to surf.  As you can see, the surfing conditions are not very good.

This is the view from the veranda of an open-air party room in the campground.  To give you an idea of how steep the hillside is, this is the middle terrace.

There is a very nice little town, La Penita de Jaltemba, within "walking" distance of the campground.  The roundtrip distance is about a mile.  The walk is not too bad except for the steep hill you have to climb on returning to your site.
