San Ignacio, BCS

Dec 2005

We stayed in the El Padrino Campgroung.  It is a small campground only a few blocks from the main town square.  The sites are large and well shaded.  Unfortunately, they are also sometimes well watered.  A few minutes after the photo was taken, a water pipe broke and flooded the area.

The campground had its own restaurant and bar.  I can recommend the bar but I didn't try the food.

Like many towns in Mexico, San Ignacio is built around the town square or zocalo.  The zocalo is the center of the town's activity.  As you can see, there was not a lot of activity this day.

Local businesses are clustered around the square, including the van parked next to the zocalo in the center of the picture where they were selling tacos.  Even this popular activity was slow today.

This is the mission church of San Ignacio.  It is built from lava stone and the walls are four feet thick.

There are many rock paintings in the hills around the town.  There are tours available to visit them.  This example of rock art is in the museum just south of the church.

San Ignacio is a quaint little town typical of towns all over Mexico and is well worth the stop.
